The experiences of elderly family members inspired the thesis
Oona Paananen, a student of Information Networks, completed her thesis in Sari Kujala's group, focusing on eHealth services for dementia from the caregivers' perspective.
The thesis position was found by chance with the help of a friend. “A friend said that they had spotted this thesis position, which would probably interest me,” Oona thanks her friend. The position was exactly what Oona had dreamed of since the beginning of her studies. “I wanted to do my thesis precisely on this topic,” she describes.
The digital transition has impacted Oona's and her loved ones' lives. “I was inspired by this topic through my grandparents' experiences. As technology becomes easier, it becomes harder for my grandparents too,” Oona describes the importance of the topic. “One of my family members has dementia, and that should be better taken into consideration in many things, like technology,” she clarifies.
Although the topic was personal, it might also have made the thesis easier. Oona's thesis included conducting interviews. She describes that the interviewees sensed that she truly cared about the subject herself.
The thesis taught many new things. Oona describes being surprised but also gaining a better understanding of the realities related to technology for the older adults. She describes the older adults as being skeptical, but still willing to try things if the benefits are made clear enough. “Before this, I might have had more of an impression that the older adults were more resistant to technology,” Oona says.
She believes that the older adults could benefit better from technology if they had more information about the topic and its advantages. “The benefits of technology should be communicated more clearly to the older adults,” Oona continues. “The older adults don't stay up to date as well as younger people on what a certain device or product can do,” she clarifies.
The studies in Information Networks were strongly multidisciplinary. “I gained the skills for a really wide range of activities, although the working life can also require a certain level of specialization,” Oona describes her studies. In her master's degree, Oona specialized in user-centeredness. “I wanted to develop eHealth services in healthcare with the older adults in mind,” Oona elaborates on her thoughts from the early stages of her studies.
She applied to study Information Networks at the time and is pleased with her choice. “Through my studies, I got a taste of what this field is like, and I was able to strengthen my view of my own strengths,” she describes. “My strengths are a human-centered approach and understanding of various things, which I gained during my studies,” Oona continues. She also recommends the studies to curious people who are interested in various topics.
Oona enjoyed her time at Aalto and in Kujala's research group. “It was really nice, and I mentioned it in the preface of my thesis,” she tells joyfully. Working as part of the research group exceeded her expectations positively. This was especially important now, when the employment situation is challenging, and many have to work without pay or support from a supervisor. “This place was a jackpot and a very beneficial experience,” Oona describes. With the good experience, Oona has started to consider further studies after a short break. She would like to continue with a similar topic, focusing perhaps on older adults with dementia. “Older adults need to get the support they require – especially in healthcare,” she clarifies. “The older you get, the more you need healthcare,” she adds.
“I'll miss this thesis position, even though I'm also relieved that the thesis is ready,” Oona states at the end. Perhaps we'll see her again someday here at Aalto.
