More Than the Degree

My experience from participation in the "Huawei Seeds for the Future" program

Last year, I was chosen to become a Huawei scholar in the Seeds for the Future program. In August, I spent 5 days attending live sessions and taking online courses about ICT. And it was awesome!

Huawei wants to promote ICT industry development and support talents. However, the main reasons for organizing Huawei Seeds for the Future are closing the gap between knowledge learned in the classroom and the skills required by the industry (what is needed so badly!) and enhancement of the knowledge transfer. Thus, for the last 13 years the chosen students in the countries that Huawei is located in can participate in this program. Huawei Seeds for the Future was organized for the first time online in 2020 so unfortunately due to the pandemic I missed the usual two-week long trip to China. Nevertheless, together with 9 other students from Finland (including 2 other students from Aalto!) we experienced extremely insightful sessions and learned more than we were expecting. And, duh, we had high hopes.

Participation certificate

The mandatory curriculum consisted of livestream sessions, learning material about Huawei, basic and advanced courses in 5G, AI, Cloud Computing, and at least 1 elective class of our choice. I decided to take the Overview of IoT Technologies, Smarthome Network Overview, and Strategic Leadership as my elective curriculum. All courses are available on the ilearningX platform, so I can continue learning and go back to the material whenever I need.

Daily livestreams included the following topics: Chinese Knotting, Introduction of the Classical Musical Instrument – the Chinese Pipa, Tech in Consumer Research, Business Strategy & Leadership, Q&A session and, of course, the Opening and Closing Ceremony. During the Opening Ceremony we had the honor to meet among others Mika Lauhde, the Global Vice-President from Huawei Headquarters and in the Closing Ceremony his Excellency Ambassador Jarno Syrjälä from the Finnish Embassy in Beijing in China and the Country Manager of Huawei Finland Yang Ge. Wow!

I applied in the beginning of July, so if you got curious and want to send your application too, observe Huawei Finland LinkedIn job adds. If you want to know more, please visit: https://www.huawei.com/minisite/seeds-for-the-future/index.html
