Welcome to Aalto University! Whether you're a local student or an international newcomer, embarking on your academic journey here is an exciting and transformative experience. As an upcoming second-year student, I'm thrilled to share some invaluable tips and experiences to help you kickstart your studies at Aalto University and make the most of your time here.

Orientation is Your Friend:

Aalto University’s orientation week is full of welcome events that help you not only to get to know your studies, but also to headstart you to meet your future classmates, guild members, and other students in the university. By the end of my orientation week, I had gotten to meet A LOT of people studying different areas and enjoy friendships for orientation to this day! And that's what Aalto does well - encourage students to get out of their comfort zone and explore what the university has to offer them.

Engage with Student Clubs & Associations:

Aalto has a vibrant student community with over 200 clubs and associations. Joining one related to your interests is a fantastic way to make friends and get involved in extracurricular activities. Once you start your studies at Aalto, you become a member of your subject-specific association, which offers different kinds of amenities, such as a guild room to relax or study in, excursions to companies, networking events, parties and so much more!

In addition to subject-specific associations, there are different clubs/associations, which focus on more extracurricular aspects, varying from sports to leisure and games to music. The list goes on!

Aalto's Digital Tools are the key to your heart:

Aalto offers various digital tools and platforms for students to plan their studies and keep up with their tasks and schedules. There are two main digital platforms that you will be using a lot: SISU and MyCourses. SISU is the platform where you get to plan your studies and choose your courses for the academic year. It can seem confusing at first but is easy to get a handle on as you progress in your studies. MyCourses is where course-specific announcements, assignments, and deadlines are given. This way, you can keep up with what you're learning during your courses.

Embrace Diversity:

Aalto University is known for its diverse and inclusive community. Engage with students from all around the world, as this cultural exchange can be incredibly enriching.

Master Public Transportation:

Helsinki has an excellent public transportation system. Get an HSL travel card and explore the city and its surroundings. Aalto University has an amazing transportation route as it settles right between Helsinki and Espoo, with buses, metros, and very soon trams traveling through the university!

Take Advantage of Campus Facilities:

Aalto University boasts modern facilities and libraries. There are many spaces around campus that students can use to study or work on their own projects. I highly recommend downloading the Aalto Space App to explore these spaces and book rooms smoothly.

Seek Academic Support:

If you ever need help with your studies, Aalto provides several support services whether it is academic or personal! Don't hesitate to reach out to your professors or advisors if you have questions or concerns about your studies, and each program has a study counselor who is reachable anytime.

Stay Healthy and Active:

Aalto promotes a healthy lifestyle, and there are many sports facilities on campus, such as a running track, football field, tennis and padel court, indoor sports facilities, and gym- you name it! Join a sports club or make use of the facilities to stay active and maintain your well-being.

Take Breaks and Have Fun

University life is not just about studying. Make sure to take breaks, socialize, and explore the vibrant Aalto and Helsinki nightlife. Balancing work and play is essential for a fulfilling student experience.

Starting your studies at Aalto University is a journey filled with learning, growth, and

unforgettable experiences. Embrace the opportunities, connect with your peers, and make the most of your time here. Remember, your time at Aalto is not just about earning a degree; it's about shaping your future and building lasting memories.

Enjoy every moment of your Aalto adventure, and welcome to this incredible community!
