More Than the Degree

🎓 Orientation Week at Aalto University

Orientation week at Aalto University isn’t just about lectures and schedules, it’s the real start of your life in Finland. Having gone through it twice, I can say it’s intense, exciting, and sometimes a little overwhelming… but also one of the best parts of the whole experience.

1️⃣ Get to Know Otaniemi 🗺️

Your new campus is not just a collection of lecture halls. It’s a living environment: modern architecture 🏛️, startup hubs 🚀, design labs 🎨, and student lounges ☕ are all within walking distance. Take time during orientation tours to really explore, it will save you from getting lost later and help you feel at home.

2️⃣ Tutors Are Your Lifeline 🙌

Every group of new students at Aalto is assigned a student tutor 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓. They’re usually older students who know the system inside out. Ask them anything like how to register for courses 📝, where to buy affordable lunch, or even where to find the best sauna. They’ve been in your shoes and are there to make your transition smoother.

3️⃣ Experience Finnish Traditions Early 🧖‍♂️🍲

One of the highlights of Aalto orientation is discovering Finnish culture together. Whether it’s your first sauna visit 🧖, tasting salmon soup 🐟, or joining a city tour in Helsinki 🏙️, say yes. These moments break the ice and become memories you’ll carry for years.

4️⃣ Join the Student Associations

Aalto has one of the most active student union cultures in Finland 🇫🇮. During orientation week, you’ll see countless associations presenting their activities. Whether you’re into design 🎨, technology 💡, entrepreneurship 🚀, or social events 🎶, there’s an association for you. Joining one is the fastest way to integrate into student life.

5️⃣ Be Ready for Events 🗓️

Orientation week is full of events like welcome ceremonies 🎤, info sessions 📚, parties 🎊, tours 🚶, workshops 🛠️. It can feel overwhelming. Don’t try to do everything, but do try a mix of academic and social events!

6️⃣ Expect International Friendships 🌍🤝

At Aalto, you’ll meet people from dozens of countries. Orientation week is the best time to build those first connections, so don’t be shy! Everyone is equally eager to meet new people 💬.

7️⃣ Take Care of Practical Things Early 🏦🚌

Bank accounts 💳, travel cards 🚇, housing questions 🏠, and residence permits 📄 all get easier if you sort them out during orientation. Use the info desks, ask questions, and check the guides Aalto provides, you’ll thank yourself later when classes start.

✨ Final Thought ✨

Orientation week at Aalto is both intense and rewarding. The first time, you’ll feel like you’re diving into the unknown 🌊. The second time, you realize it’s not only about adapting but it’s about thriving, learning, and building a network that will carry you far beyond your studies 🌟.

So: explore 🌍, connect 🤝, ask 🙋, and enjoy 😃. Your Aalto journey truly begins here 🚀.

The Summer I… decided to move to Finland 🌿✨

The summer I decided to move to Finland didn’t start with a dramatic moment. There was no instant epiphany, no single turning point. Instead, it was a slow accumulation of thoughts, feelings, and what-ifs that finally tipped me over. In the summer when I turned 16, I visited Finland for the first time. It was a short 2-week trip to a sports center near Helsinki, where we went hiking, camping, kayaking, and even played disc golf. In general, a very Finnish summer experience.

Kicking off the semester with my old and new buddies

It was that time of the year again when campus lit up with the appearance of new faces. For our Sustainable Entrepreneurship Master's program, that meant meeting the second cohort. We, the second-years, decided that nothing can compete with fun games and free dinners for the best bonding experience.
